Filter socks are a fine membrane that fits over a 50mm screen that has already been slotted; the reason for fitting the filter sock is that it has an opening of only 125-150 micron; this keeps out any fine sand or impurities from entering the test bore as the standard opening on a PVC screen is 400 micron minimum. By stopping the fines from entering the bore you avoid degradation of the bores gravel pack and if pumping the bore stopping the fine abrasions from entering the pump thus saving the life of the pump.
